If you have the circuit dance in Mumbai, chances are you would have known Terrence Lewis. But today, all India knows. And this because of the new reality dance show, dance India dance on TV Zee.
As one of the judges Choreographer in serial, Lewis has become a household name. But the man has been around for many years now. Lewis runs a very successful dance school in the beautiful Juhu Beach, Mumbai and had a successful run as Bollywood Choreographer and dance instructor in Mumbai.
About Terence Lewis
If you can recall watching dance Antara Mali in the Ram Gopal Varma directed film, Naach or Rachel Shelley and Aamir Khan make the Vienna Waltz in Lagaan, then you need to know that the two were in a choreography of Lewis.
Beyond these there was also the personal trainer for a host Bollywood celebrities. Clients include the likes of Madhuri Dixit, Mallaika Arora Khan, Roshan Khan, Gauri Khan, Suzanne Antara Mali and many others.
However, many will not know the man is an extraordinarily gifted dancer having trained in jazz and Ballet and today is a modern acclaimed dancer.
Also trained at the dance school, Alvin Toffler, Ailey & Broadway in New York and was the first Indian to win the prestigious scholarship dance WEB, representing India in Vienna, Austria.
Scholarship program
In 2005, started College, Terence Lewis dance Foundation. The Foundation has dancers and also runs training programs scholarships for those wishing to take this as a career option.
Called the Terence Lewis dance Scholarship Trust Foundation (TLDFS), offering one year of study which is partly financed by the Foundation. While the full program is priced at Rs 1, 50000, remuneration of pupils is around 80,000 Rs.
This is an annual fee for the convenience of students, the Foundation is open to taking money in INSTALLMENTS as well.
Lesson
The long-term program will include training in various forms of dance, both Western and Indian-with a particular focus on contemporary style.
Students will learn Contemporary, Jazz Ballet, Ballet, Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Salsa, Hip Hop, martial arts, dance and movement theory and pedagogy.
What is the theory of dance and pedagogy? Well, basically at the end of the year, there will be a written exam where you will be challenged to understand the history of dance and style.
Simply put, pedagogy is the science of teaching. This course will teach students techniques for teaching dance. Creative teaching to handle children and adults to be exact.
Place
While the entries are being sort of the whole country, the training could happen in Mumbai. However, for outstation students, the Foundation can facilitate lodging and food requirements.
Selection process
Starting 15 June 2009, the Foundation will begin to receive calls from participants. All you need to do is call the Foundation and to fix a time for auditions. You will need to take a piece of dance, two minutes in length.
There will be four rounds of auditions at all based on chosen a gang of 20 students.
There are no prerequisites for entry, and you do not need to be for example a trained dancer. However, beginners encouraged not as this course is meant for dancers with a certain level of maturity and responsibility. The selectors will naturally look for dance and distinct quality bring to the table as stage presence and appeal for example your interest.
The hearings will be on for two months before the final cut. The hearings are free and enthusiasts are expected to call and fix a year. Each student will likely be allotted a maximum of 15 minutes. Timings for auditions is 10: 30 am. to 4 pm four-five times in a week.
Career options
While dance as often seen as a hobby, the idea of a course like this is to educate people to get to dance as a full-time profession. Today, dancers need not only in Bollywood, but in the enterprise shows as well. There is great demand for professional dancers for corporate presentations.
The best dancers from this batch will be given the option to participate Terence Lewis Dance Company.
